  December 15, 2018

(11 Dec 2018) A public prosecutor is requesting continued detention for a Bahraini footballer arrested in Thailand.
Hakeem al-Araibi arrived at a Bangkok court Tuesday for the hearing.
Al-Araibi plays for a soccer team in Australia's Victoria state league and had travelled to Thailand on a holiday with his wife when was detained in Bangkok in November.
He was held on an Interpol warrant issued at the request of Bahrain, despite having refugee status in Australia.
The footballer was sentenced in absentia in Bahrain in 2014 to 10 years in prison for allegedly vandalizing a police station, a charge he denies.
Al-Araibi shouted "please stop them" to the media as he was escorted into the court building wearing handcuffs.
The Australian government has called for al-Araibi to be immediately released from detention.
